It could be the MAF, but normally the car would not run right at mid revs either, in my (small) experience.
I had similar problem before where the car was idling at about 1.5k rpm sometimes, and like you say plugging out the MAF made it idle about right, but it ran like crap. Apart from a dent in my wallet, replacing the MAF made no difference for me though because it was the idle control valve in the end. All I needed to do was clean it out with carb cleaner, problem sorted.
I would try this first because its an easy DIY and its free.
btw not sure about resetting the ECU, but I thought that the starting the car and leave it running without touching the pedals was just to reset the throttle sensor position?? Anyone know for sure?
