Hi, Bad news, sorry to hear that.
How many miles had she done and when was the belt last changed? A dodgy variator will not cause the belt to fail, at worst it won't be able to pressurise and advance the camshaft timing (hence the powerloss you describe).
I don't know if a 1.6 would drop straight in. At a rough guess, i would say yes but the ECU would need to be remapped to adjust (or replaced, but then all the locks would need replacing for the immobilisor too).
Is it an alloy topped or plastic topped engine?
