OK Guys, where do I start?
Mt 146 2.0 is dying.... AGAIN
Ill give you an idea of what its doing now.
In the morning (its cold at the moment but I don’t think it has any bearing on the situation). I go to start the car and on first turn it sounds like its about to start then just dies. when I try the second time I have to keep cranking the engine for a good 5 - 7 seconds before the engine slowly chugs to life.
It doesn’t spring to life but kinda just runs enough not to stall. Pressing the accelerator does nothing. I depress the accelerator to the floor and after maybe 10 seconds the engine responds.
This is where it gets a little strange...
I stick the car in reverse and pull out of my drive without any problem, when I put the car in first gear the car doesn’t want to move.
I get a very slow pull away. I can feel and hear a clonk when I change into second gear (but only first thing in the morning on the first mile).
I have to pull from a small road onto a fast carriageway and as I pull out the car does not move, it gets into the middle of the road and will only crawl at 2 or 3 MPH. If I keep the accelerator depressed after a few seconds the engine picks up and starts to go until it hits 3500 revs then it just dies like its hitting the limiter
The same problem happens through all gears.
When driving on the motorway in fifth gear the car will max out at 160 KPH this is way too low (I know it can do 210
). But when driving at this new max of 160 I can hear the engine trying to go faster like something is cutting in and out. Bit hard to describe but it goes a bit like this: broom, BROOM, broom, BROOM, broom. Well I guess you get the idea.
The clutch is not slipping!!
Ill give you an idea of what I know to try and make life easier.
I removed the spark plugs, all were a bit black and burned. Some had oil on the threads but not on the spark part. Cleaning the sparks made no difference (they are rather new).
The temp sensor on the dash has been reading low, infact it hardly moves. When I stop after some driving it moves up to the midway point(never goes over) but drops out of the sky as soon as I start to drive again. The temp used to be like a rock dead centre 90 deg.
Occasionally there is a petrol smell in the boot compartment of the car, cant really say if this is constant or not as I rarely go in the boot!
Not sure if this is relevant but, about a week ago when I would turn the low beams on only the sidelight would illuminate on the dash (the sidelights and low beam would work). I passed this off as a lamp in the dash but it came back to life a couple of days ago.
But.... now when I turn the sidelights on the indicator on the dash illuminates both the sidelights and low beam!!
Any suggestions on what is going on would be great.
Oh the car has done 100,000 kilometres.
Thanks and sorry for the long post..
