Gear Lever Ball Joint - Rod Selection Version

There's plenty on the forums about problems with the cable selector mechanism on pretty much all models, but I can't see any about my issue with rod based selection mechanism on a 145 1.6 TS. The issue is that the lever itself has about 15mm of vertical movement in it and selection of gears, particularly first and second, is stiff unless you hold the lever up as you shift. I believe the bottom part of the plastic receptacle for the ball joint has collapsed. According to Eper, The lever and balljoint receptacle are one unit (part no. 46456075) and it looks like replacing it involves working under the car with the exhaust removed.

Is anyone familiar with this? Is the part available, or are parts available to fix it? Is there anything that can be done from inside the cabin (other than holding the lever up when one changes gear)?
