I had a coil break down that caused rough running. It went really fast- so over a period of 15 minutes it went from a slight unevenness to only working on 2 cylinders. Boxer injection coils are 2 coils, each feed 2 cylinders.
I think I have a spare coil for a 1.6 if you find out that it is this.
Delays like you mention are often air leaks in the induction system (hard to see how with the 1.6), dodgy MAF (the airflow meter) or air temp sensor, or a knackered lambda sensor.
If it smells rich it might be a water temp sensor failure.
Is the injector light on?
A compression test would be a good idea because you can avoid major expense if you know there is nothing fundamentally wrong with the block and heads.
