BLOWN HEAD GASKET 146ti HELP PLEASE
My 146ti needs a new variator and timing belt etc which i have been quoted £525 to fix... then at the weekend my head gasket went, i called the garage who quoted for the variator etc and to put the car right now they want £1000!!!! does this sound right to everyone? it seems incredible to me that i buy the car for £950 and 4 weeks later i have to spend more than i paid for it to get it back on the road!!!!!
The mechanic i spoke to said apart from an engine swap, doing a head gasket on a 2.0 16v twin spark is the worst possible job to undertake. he did not fill me with joy...
I am assuming its the head gasket anyway, there is 'mayo' under the oil cap, and some rust coloured slimy sludge in the coolant tank. I was driving up the dual carriageway when the car totally overheated, boiled over from the header tank and now sounds like its running on 3 cylinders... until its warm then its not so bad, however on tickover its still really lumpy. I filled the tank with water & coolant to the maximum mark and after about 30miles the level was about 2cm under the minimum mark, i cant see any obvious leaks but do occasionally get puffs of white smoke from the exhaust.
I wonder if a faulty thermostat caused the problem, it seems to run at about 90 degrees but drops considerably lower when moving fast.
Help and opinions please!!!
