146 master key

Can anyone help with a query?

I have a 146 Ti the key is wearing a bit and is a bit stiff to turn in the ignition, the master key turns the ignition with no probs at all.

The question really is, will i encounter any problems using the master key all the time?

The manual advises against it but dosn't say why.

Re: 146 master key

not owning an alfa with different colour keys etc my first thought would be because you do not want to loose/damage the master key as it is potentially a lot of money to sort out...my advice would be to keep the master key safe and get another re-cut

I seem to think it is only desighned to be used in emergencies, and can actually knacker things up if you keep using it. Added to the fact if you loose it you'll wipe £500 off the value of your car. Get another "ordinary" key cut. Its not worth risking it

Re: 146 master key

You should be able to buy a blank key from Alfa, just get it cut to operate the lock, then put the insides of the old one, including the small chip for the immobiliser into the new one. You won't even need to re-program the key that way.

Re: 146 master key

Thanks for the advice guys, looks like a new key is on the cards when I eventually get to an alfa dealer, the nearest one is forty miles away!

How much will I be looking at costwise?

Re: 146 master key

When I bought my 146 it only had the master key, so went to an alfa dealer to get another, they would only supply two keys at a cost of Eur160 (£108) So I went to a locksmith and he was able to cut and program a key for Eur50 (£34). I have never had any problems with it. Any locksmith that cuts car keys should be able to copy your key.
