Re: Buying a fixer upper
Full set of valves, about £200 - £300, belts and tensioners around £200, variator (does the 1.4 have one?) about £80? Gaskets and seals about £100 I think, fluids and filters, about £50. I don't think it's possible to have a snapped cambelt without crahing the valves into the pistons, so you will be looking at a new set of big ends and maybe a crank regrind. Allow another £100 for the shells (should get mains and big ends for that) and about £80 for a regrind. While it's all apart, you may as well put a new clutch in too, about £120. Consider the water pump too.
Not cheap, but an Alfa is no worse than any other marque when it comes to rebuilding a snapped cambelt engine.
Savings may be made - valves are available individually, and are £15 - £20 each, so if only a few are damaged, you won't have to do them all. BUT MAKE 100% SURE that the 'good' ones really are good!
I'm not a mechanic, but from similar discussions in the past, these are prices I've picked up from others. Feel free, anyone, to jump in and correct them, or add any other bits I may have forgotten.
There's always one - and it's usually me!
