On the way back from work today noticed a strange burning smell and smoke coming from the bonnet, got home and found that the new oil I had just added was all over the engine minus an oil cap. I added around a litre when it was just over min level, I guess this was too much ?
Any way can anyone tell me where cheapest place to get an OEM oil cap is and now that my oil is just under min how much do I need to put in in order to avoid another explosion !
Twin spark or boxer engine? If boxer make sure all the engine breather pipes are clear including the flame-trap (is this fitted to the injected engines, my 33 does but I've not seen the equivalent on my 1.6 146?). If TS you probably didn't do the cap up sufficiently. Not available at Halfords, a dealer should have one.
One garage I used managed to forget to put tha cap back on after they changed the oil.
Make sure you take the engine cover off, and get all the oil out from around the plugs and coils. Clean the inlet manifold cover, and the connectors on the back of it. Engine oil is slightly conductive, and doesn't do good things to electrical connectors.
