Chilling Alfa 146 2.0 16v Twin Spark Misfire

I have very recently purchased a 1996 146 2.0 16 Twin Spark. For the first few weeks there was no problem at all but now every now and then (becoming almost daily) the car starts to misfire, usually when changing up gears, never when idling and very rarely when in top gear. It will start to misfire and become very juddery (?) for a few seconds and will either clear itself on it's own or by accelarting hard or going up/down a gear.

Did have RAC out who drove it around the car park, pushed the HT leads to make sure they were all connected, for a few days after this it didn't do it at all but has just started it again.

Anyone had a similiar problem or have any idea as to what it could be. Was thinking possibly HT/coils/spark plugs need replacing or is it more likely to be fuel filter/injectors etc?

Re: Alfa 146 2.0 16v Twin Spark Misfire

What's the spark plug history on it? They are due at 60K miles, but Alfa charge ~£20/plug (and there's 8) so it may be that a previous owner skipped the change. Also, the rocker cover gasket can leak oil into the spark plug recess, causing the HT leads to degrade. I would start by getting the engine cover off, and having a look at the HT leads and plugs.

Better Check For Any Oil/water In The Plug Holes, Had Quite A Few In My Time Working On Them. Has The Previous Owner Ever Steamed The Engine/ Also Check For Signs Of Shorting Out On The Alloy Top Cover Alfa A Few Years Back Did A Mod For This Type Off Missfire You Had To Grind The Ridges Down And Re,insulate The Wiring Not The Ht Leads Just The Thin Wire For The Coil Packs Hope This Resolves Your Problem.
