146 plugs, leads, coils and all that gubbins
My 146 Ti has been running like a dog lately. Well, almost since I've had it to tell the truth, but that's a mush longer story... It sounds and feels like it's only running on 3, maybe even 2 cylinders at times. Last weekend I checked out the condition of the plugs etc.
I was horified when I began pulling the leads off to find the bores full of oil. I've since read on here that it's likey just to be the rocker cover gasket, so just I cleaned it all up and plan on changing it ASAP. Unfortuatly I didn't have the right tools on me to pull the plugs, but just looking at the state of the top of em, they might just be the originals. The cars now on 130K+. Eek!
Same goes for the leads which feed the smaller plugs from the coils. Thing is, whilst these are all fairly cheap and easy to replace, what about the actual coils? I'm used to having a dizzy rather than having a coil on top of each plug. The connections for these look a bit past their best but at that price I don't really fancy replacing them all on a whim. What's the expected life for these?
Also, Coil1 feeds the 2nd plug in cylinder4, Coil4 > 2nd plug in Cylin1, 2>3 and 3>2. Is this correct? Just seems a bit backwards to me. Am I ok to pull coils and leads off whilst the car is running, or am I likely to get a nasty shock from the coils? Finally, the plugs are 10mm and 14mm aren't they for when I next head down the tool shop?
Sorry for all the questions!
