There is no AFM on an 8v boxer engine, unless it's the 1.7 16v I believe.
There are a number of other electronic devices that can cause this, I'd start off by cleaning the air temperature sensor (in the black pipe running from the air filter to the throttle body) and also ensuring that the vacuum pipe running to the MAS (Mass Air Sensor) is clean. The MAS sits on the rear of the plenum (the aluminum heart shaped unit with Alfa Romeo written on it) and is connected to the bottom of the main plenum chamber.
Also consider cleaning/replacing the spark plugs and check that the spark-plug leads don't have a rust build-up on either end of them.
Also clean the other vacuum tubes running into the plenum and run some injector cleaner through the petrol.
