You could be right, if it's failing to warm up, except when stationary, then it's probably the 'Stat.
I'm not sure about the boxers, but I think it is on top of the block under the plenum.
One tip, if it's anything like the one I've just changed on my Ti, make sure you have a selection of Jubilee clips ready. Alfa like to use crimped clips that are, at best, very difficult to put back on, and the Ti has about 6 different hoses connected to it.
After changing mine, the car is certainly quicker to warm up, and maintains temperature better, but my heater is still only luke warm. It had plenty of flushing with Holts Speed flush, so I guess the next step is to get the dashboard apart and have a look at the heater valve. Winter's on it's way!
