146 2.0ti Cuts out. Restarts immediately
98 2.0ti 145K orginal engine (and owner)
Event: - Runs perfectly for hours / weeks. Engine dies, all electrics /fuel appear ok. Turn off ignition. Restart, car runs perfectly, until the next time. Typically, this occurs after about an hour or so or normal mid speed road driving.
Sometimes this event occurs more and more frequently, to the point where it runs for a minute then cuts out again. (Then the RAC come to the rescue!)
Engine running with an indicated water temp of 70C when driving. Which seems rather low.. (Current winter ambient 10C ish.) When this event occurs the temp creaps up to around 80C.
Temp gauge is reading ok. Checking on the drive, runs at around 80 ish, with no problems. Dual speed fan cuts in at around 90 and high speed a bit above. No cut out problem.
The fact that the engine cuts completely, then restarts immediately seems to imply an ECU / Temp CU reset. But what is causing it to "trip" in the first place.
May be related, but doesn't fit with the temperature readings. The low speed fan mode was not working, wire to resistor on fan had burnt out. Fixed this, but havent driven car / seen event since. I can't see why this could be the reason since the fan shouldn't cut in until the 90s
Variator rattling. Performance otherwise OK. No sign of water / oil mix
