2.0 QV Worn Little Ends

Hi Everyone

Have a rattle coming from the top of the engine, diagnosed as a worn little end.
Can I just replace the piston or will it need major engine surgury?
If so would the best bet be to replace the engine with a second hand unit.
Thanks for your ideas

I would put money on it being the Variator rather than the little ends.

Standard belt change cost + 100 for the variator part and another 30 mins labour to fit.

I must admit that crossed my mind - when I changed the belts 3000 miles ago I didn't change the variator because it wasn't noisy on start up.
The rattle only occurs between 2500 & 3000 rpm, at idle there is no noise.
The only doubt is that the rattles appears to come from cylinder number 3 area, although it is difficult to tell for sure!!!

You probably already tied this but if not, use a piece of tubing as a makeshift stethoscope to listen to more localised ares of the engine which will help pinpoint the actual location of the noise more acurately. The pointed end of a screwdriver held against parts of the engine with the handle pressed to your ear also works.
