It could be the CV joints, though normally they "sing" when they're on the way out, rather than knock or grind.
"Grind" is usually the brakes.. so check that the shield on the back is secure and not too close to the disc, or it can touch.
"Knock" is usually a suspension part.. so have a look at the wishbones and the damper top mount. That doesn't explain "grind" though. I'd drop the damper out (it's not as bad as it sounds) pack the top bearing with a bit of lithium grease and then refit it. If the sound goes away, that's the culprit. When the damper assembly is out, you can have a wiggle of the wishbone and the anti-roll bar drop links.
Also make sure you have a look at the aux belt... all that clattering could be failing alternator bearings. Does the alternator light on the dash go out quickly when you start the car, or does it glow very faintly red?
Is your power steering fluid topped up and does the pulley look/sound okay when it's going round?
