I've read up on how to do it for the 2litre twinspark and assume the 1.4 is similar but without balancer shafts. If you search AO you'll find out lots, particularly in the 155 forum.
Basically as I recall you need special setting caps to keep the camshafts at TDC when fitting the new belt (I think they cost approx £50) and you need a tool which you can bolt loosely to the front of the variator to unscrew it from the camshaft - BUT the camshaft must be removed and held in a soft-jawed vice, the setting cap is just that - for setting it up only, not for holding the camshaft while the variator is removed.
Also, if you search the net for 'Sealy tools' and Alfa Romeo you should be able to find one of the tool suppliers that also has instructions. You can also get tools for setting the belt tensioner, though I'm not sure that these are 100% necessary.
