Stick some Optimax unleaded in there and also bung in some octane booster (Halfords @ £5). If you have an inherent pinking problem caused by poor timing, then boosting your fuel up will certainly reduce the symptoms and possibly cure them altogether.
If there is a vibration problem (heat shield, some pump or other part) then running "hot" fuel won't have any effect. You will then at least have worked out where the problem is.
The revs the problem occurs at, suggests that there is something going on in the variator and as has been said, a problem with how it moves to the advance will cause pinking. The fact that it's noisier with low oil also points there. I'd have the whole thing looked at again.
Dunno abour your oil consumption but it's probably not related to the problem. You must be burning it somewhere, if it's not dripping. If your valve guide oil seals were done when the valves were overhauled, then the rings are probably causing it. Just a case of what costs more... topping up with oil, or a head rebuild.
