There is a small clip on the hot/cold cable that retains the outer sheath so that cable moves inside of it. Mine broke on my 146, and I removed the dash sections to access it. What I noticed was that there was no resistance felt when adjusting the output with the wheel.
If this component has failed, you can easily make a replacement with some copper pipe. Just cut a section to size, crush it over a screw-driver of a similar diameter to the sheath, and drill a screw-hole... trim the excess as required.
