Erratic Idling - 146
Please can anyone help - I am having problems with my N Reg (96) 146 1.6 boxer. It has developed an intermittent problem with the idling revs which can happen at any time - there doesn't seem to be a pattern. Basically, it will start revving itself up and down between 900-1500 rpm and although it runs, it will be very jerky (as if you are in too high a gear). The only way to rectify it is to turn off the engine for a few minutes and restart it, when it is usually OK. I drove it 200 miles down the M4 last week without any problems, then the day after, it starts playing up again.
Also, sometimes when starting from cold, it can rev too high (2500-3000) and you have to turn it off for a few minutes to rectify it.
I took it to an Alfa dealer for a service and they had it for 10 days and it behaved perfectly through that time. The day after I collected it, it started again! Maybe it hates me!
The dealer said that nothing showed up on the computer, although I don't think they really searched for the problem as they said they had not come across this before.
Any help or advice on getting this sorted out would be greatly appreciated. I'm in the London area if anyone knows of a good specialist that can help.
