Re: Handbrake light
I love how there are half a dozen possibilities suggested by all :-) Anyway my light illuminated every time I cornered hard, once the front pads wore a bit (read: quite a bit). This was followed by a low pad warning light and me replacing the front pads with a few microns of friction material left. That's value for money motoring! ;-)
The "I topped up the fluid and it's ok now" sounds like something bad waiting to happen - kinda like when the pretty girl in a horror movie locks the door, then relaxes thinking she's safe :-) It was coming on because fluid was low due to (1) not much friction material left on pads or (2) a fluid leak somewhere. Personally I wouldn't be comfortable just topping up and calling it fixed. Check your brakes properly, basically.
