Did you try a different sensor but with the same results?
It's anyway unlikely that a new sensor would just pack up.. so there has to another problem.
I'm pretty sure that lamda sensors have a relay.. to switch the lambda heater wire on and off at low revs. This may be your problem, since it sounds like it only has problems when you go up the rev band. If you can work out which relay it is, then you might be able to see some wiring problem... usually the wires into the bottom of the relays get corroded internally, even though everything looks still connected okay.
There's also a way to check that the lamda wires have the right current at the pins.. someone will hopefully find the link to a thread (or know how what readings you should get and when).
