HELP!! Alfa 146 TS burning way too much oil

Hello all,

I own a '98 Alfa 146 16v Twin Spark and it's consuming about 1 quart of oil /week.

The thing is that it DOES come out as smoke at the exhaust: a white-ish to light grey-ish smoke when revved (not so much when idle).
But so far it hasn't lost any power, no engine faults, no noises, no stalling...

Could this be due to simple things such as poor oil quality, worn valve seals, problems with the fuel mixture etc... or do I need to worry about "serious" engine trouble?

Thanks in advance!

My local dealer said that the T.S engine doesn't use as much oil when you use castrol Magnatech GTX compared to seliena.

So that might be worth a try. I am as its cheeper. 9 for 4.5L

Re: HELP!! Alfa 146 TS burning way too much oil

Are you using 20k selenia or racing selenia? The racing oil is thinner, consumption goes up.

The piston rings are very soft on the TS, and is over fuelled to help keep them lubed. They are soft to reduce friction, an old racing technique. You should find that a small amount of oil will creep past the rings and get burnt.

Or like you say, could be worn valve seal.

You could try a compression test on each cyl, make sure they are all within tolerance.

Yup, my garage people say the same about the Castrol oil. im using 20k right now, cause if its burning it anyways... no point in spending the $ for full synth.

I'll take it tomorrow for the compression test and hope that "soft piston rings" doesn't also mean "delicate piston rings"...

or maybe its time to dream about the 147 upgrade
...aaaah if only i could afford it
