Need a bit more info. Does the knocking noise change with the speed of the engine and do you have any idea where abouts on the engine the noise appears to be coming from? (i.e. is it the bottom of the engine?).

Oh dear, I don't want to be the bearer of bad news and I might be wrong, but it could be the engines been run low on oil and the big end is about to let go. Have you checked the oil level?

If the beast makes a clattering sound, like a diesel, then the "sensor at the top of the engine" is the cam variator. You need to take the cam-belt off to change this, so if that's what it is, get your beast a cam-belt (and tensioner and balance belt) service and changer the variator at the same time. Alfa Workshop in Cambs can do all that.

Tap-tap-tap could be the top-end needing a valve adjustment.. not serious at all..

If it's a knock-knock-knock ... then it's way more serious.. but we need more details before we write off your bottom-end..

Do you know if it had a cambelt failure recently?
