They seem to kick a bit from 3-4000 rpm, when the variator changes... maybe yours is fried, but from what I have been told, it's OK for it to be diesely for the first 2 seconds as the oil gets pumped up.
With a higher milage like that, the engine is not going to be 'fresh' feeling at all.. I wouldn't leave the timing belts for another 25k, they could snap.
Most people seem to agree that 55k is about right... Think about it in 10k or so...
Cheaper brakes??? Don't think so... but the AlfaOwner shop has alternatives you should have a look at. If the brakes are feeling sludgy, replace the brake fluid. Makes a difference.
