Reseat the connectors in the back of the dial unit.
Undo the 2 Torx holding on the plastic surround (at the top). Pull this straight towards you to unclip the clips at the bottom.
Then undo the 4 Torx bolts holding the dials in... then gently remove... the instrument cluster is now in your hands - 2 connectors at the back, one green , one white - only go in the relevant places - unplug and re-connect.
Then see what happens - it's safe to turn on ignition without putting dials back - see how the light is, if it's still on try wiggling the connectors.
The fact it's brightness level changes implies a bad earth - maybe the LED has a dry solder joint to the PCB.
The light signal is one wire from one of the connectors to the airbag ECU, trace it and make sure it is properly contacting in the connector block.
