Hi there (Need Help Please)
New to this Forum.
I bought an Alfa145 qv about 3 months ago a real beast.
Recently only when the temperature is high about 90 (half way)
I hear a loud sort-of whistling, whining sound. It goes away if
I accelerate over 2000 rpm. Sounds sort-of fanbeltish
but goes again if the car is cool? The temperature never goes above
90 (halfway) so it obviosley doesnít affect that.
Could this be due to a lack of coolant, here in South Africa it gets quite warm.(20deg or so)
It did have a slight water leak. Which is gone now.
Where was the water leaking from?
It could be either the water pump bearings, power steering bearings, or maybe the alternator.
You could try replacing all of the belts, and see if retensioning them rids the problem. Otherwise, monitor it carefully and DRIVE ON!
Can you find the thermostat on the right of the engine block with all of the pipes running into it?? Is the leak coming from a pipe running from that?
If so, should be easy enough to fix.
Did the coolant level drop significantly enough to cause starvation to the engine?
I had a similar problem when I first bought my 145QV. There was a very slight coolant leak. It was only apparent when the car was parked overnight or left all day at work. It was only happening when the everything cooled down and the pressure in the system dropped which allowed water/coolant to escape from a seal. Alfa put an extra clip on and problem solved.
