Need you help!
I have a 145 QV ‘97
At low revs from “idle” 800 to 1200 rpm, there is a chattering/rattle (sounds like thick metal knocking) from the (what sounds like) right front of the car.
I have checked the engine mount and its tight can’t see anything obvious and we checked the heat shields above the exhaust. And bent them a bit and still the rattle.
I did however notice that the rubber engine mount does shake a bit, but that’s what it’s supposed to do! The only thing that I think is that the rubber has broken away with in the shaft (engine mount and not the bolt is chattering against the engine mount.
My '97 145 QV had a similar problem early this year. The dealer had a number of attempts at resolving the problem (we thiought it might be a driveshaft), but it was eventuially traced to loose (sheared?) gear box bolts! Car is now fine - some "spiritied" driving to check things out made me realise that I actually prefer the 145's handling to the 147's, although I did find it much harder to get comfortable in the older car!
I can't remember exactly where they are located, but they are on the outside, can be accessed from underneath the car, and link up with the exhaust downpipe/manifold in some way - one possible explanation for the problem was bad workmanship when I had a new downpipe/manifold fitted. In the end it was a simple job (new bolts), but I was worried for a while - there was a concern that the female thread had been damaged.
