Re: cooling system!
Two things... If you are not getting hot air, either the heater matrix is blocked through an air-lock, or the heater controls have become disconnected and stuck on cold.
A wire runs down from the knob to the mixer, and this may have become detached. Mine is stuck on warm in my 146.
Why the rad is leaking is another question. Either it was faulty if new, or was second-hand and damaged already I suspect.
Try flushing the system with lots of water, and then run it topped up with only water for a short while (30 mins).
When filling it with water or cooling fluid, start off by loosening the top pipe on the rad and fill from there slowly, filling both the engine block and the rad. Then connect the pipe, and slowly fill from the resevoir. Leave the resevoir cap on loosely to allow any pressure imbalance to equalise.
Now, jump into the car and start up. Turn the heater blower onto position 1 and hot. Within 10 mins you should have hot air...
One thing I noticed with my Boxer (different engine, but may apply) was that the small air blead pipe from the top of the rad to the resevoir was blocked with sediment. This caused the rad to become ineffective as it was blocked due to the trapped air, and my car was running hot.
About the Air-Con, when you run the engine, do you get one pipe running from the air-con pump going cold? If not, it's become depressurised and needs to be recharged.
If it is becoming cold, and the above fix for the air-lock in the heater matrix didn't resolve, then it sounds like the air-mixer cable is foobar.
Best of luck.
