I need a bit of the local technical expertise - I have a strong feeling that I'm being bull*****ed by the repair shop where my Alfa is being attended to at the moment after our latest mishap
but not knowing as much about engines and cars as I'd need, am not 100% sure.
So what happened: I was driving down the highway with my girlfriend about two weeks ago, looking forward to the weekend ahead of us, when suddenly we hear a clanking noise in the engine compartment and the car loses all its power
The car gets towed to the aforementioned repair shop and today I'm told that they finally got to disassembling the engine, the crankshaft has seized (I hope that's the right word to use here, English isn't my first language) and the cause of this is - and that's the part that I'm strongly suspicious about - that I did not use the Selenia oil but a non-brand of the same class (10W40) - if I remember correctly it was a BP oil that was put in (done at this same shop). Now that is actually true - I did approve that they put in a non-brand oil instead of Selenia when I had the oil changed, but I believed that as long as the class is the same there shouldn't be much of a difference. Or was I strongly mistaken and am now paying the price for it? What do you think?
The car has already undergone two major repairs since I bought it in November last year: first, immediately after purchase I had the belts and oil changed and then in April/May this year the head gasket broke on me while driving to work and all the cooling fluid leaked into the engine, resulting into a new gasket, engine head sent to a specialist for some work (don't remember what exactly that was), and of course fresh oil, filter and cooling fluid again.
I was also thinking, could the current problem be a consequence of the broken head gasket? Could it be that the mechanics botched something up while checking the engine after the head gasket broke, and now they're just trying to cover themselves with the "non-brand oil" story and hoping that I just shut up and pay the price? What do you think?
Thanks in advance
