Idea 146 ti poor enginr performance at low rpm

Hi all,
my Y reg 2001 146 ti has poor performance and flat spots until it reaches 4500 rpm and even above that its nothing to write home about. Its only done 60k and sounds really sweet. Any ideas guys. would getting a chip fitted help this, if so which is a good one.
This is my first alfa and i sold a honda civic 1.8 vti for this thinking i was in for a treat, but so far the performance is'nt even close.

My first guess would be your MAF

It is quite a common problem, and when it fails it will ruin the performance.

Try unplugging it, if the performance improves you know it is faulty.

It is located between the Airbox and the Throttlebody and has a plug/wires on the side of it.
