Cam belt changes are every 36,000 miles, you may well have suffered some kind of failure. Forget just checking the timing, do a full cam belt service. Do change the water pump, also the tensioner and idler if you want. Being a 2.0 the balancer shaft belt also needs changing, be aware that when this failes it almost always takes out the cam belt too, so don't scrimp.
When the variators get old they make the car sound like a diesel, but only at start-up, then eventually on the overrun. If it was particularly tractory at startup before you may want to change the variator with the cam belt too, it's about £90 for the part.
