Handbrake not holding
I was round a mates house last night and he happens to live on a rather steep hill. When I left I had to get out of his drive (which is level but goes onto the hill). I reversed back but couldn't go any further so went forward a bit and again couldn't go further so stuck it in reverse. Now usually I put the handbrake on at this point to hold the car while I put it in reverse gear and find the biting point so when i release i can reverse up the hill so I can get out. But when I did it last night the handbrake couldn't hold the car, i pulled it as tight as I could but it made a loud juddering screech as the car inched forward down the hill. I had to do some very quick footwork to stop myself flying into the neighbours garden.
Unfortunately I don't know how the brake system works so really not sure what can be causing this. I do know that my front brake discs and pads need replacing which I am having done in the next couple of weeks but if I need anything else done to it I might as well get it done at the same time. Could it be the calipers or the cables? Anything else it could be?
