Hmmm 2.0 Cloverleaf hunting like madman

My plastic top 2.0 Cloverleaf has a fault and I'm not sure where to start.

Basically it's hunting like crazy. And horrible to drive.

Start the engine (it starts fine). The rev hunts between normal and 3.5k - so a lot. If you slowly press the accelerator downwards, it makes no difference till you get past where 3.5k would be.

If I unplug the MAF, idle returns to normal for about 30 seconds but then gradually increases back to the 3.5k hunting.

Under driving, the engine will slowly surge on and off below 3.5k and is difficult to drive. Above 3.5k seems to drive fairly normally, although a little flat... Seems strange that an idle problem effects the drive of the car when you are moving.
Any ideas guys? I'm just off out to drive car with MAF unplugged.

It sounds like the ICV needs replacing, about 30 minutes work for someone like Smaky who is in Wiltshire near Swindon so possible not too far from you.

Or it could be that you have a split/loose airbox.

Thanks for the support, sounds promising.

The air box is messed up, someone has fitted an induction filter and left the top of the lid off, the intake pipe does jingle about a lot, maybe it's trashed the MAF too...

Thanks guys.

I'd give the idle control valve a clean.

The actuator can also swell, jamming itself a bit, if this is the case just reverse the part between the actuator and the throttle body, it spaces it out a little more and it works again.

Also worth noting that my 1.6 TS was horrid to drive and hunted a lot when my relays of doom were all blue and crumbly.
