Driving through Bristol today in my 146, to pick my wife up after her night of drunken revelry, just slowing down for traffic lights and I smell burning rubber and my steering goes heavy and the engine is dead
Try to start the car, but no joy I am now stuck in the middle of 3 lanes trying to push a car on my own then the lights change red
In the distance I see a knight in shining armour running towards me "do you want a push" "yes please", when the lights change we push the car into a side street. My helper tells me it's his good deed for the day, I thank him and he goes back to his car a 156, how many other marques would you get a complete stranger come to you aid in the pouring rain.
So my mystery helper if you are on here I would like to extend my warmest thanks without your help I would have been up a creek
Lift the bonnet and can see a small toothed belt poking out the side of the cambelt cover
. My diagnosis the balancer belt has come off and wrapped itself round the cambelt.
I had to walk to where I was supposed to meet my wife, must get my mobile mended, and then back to the car.
30 minutes later my next knight arrives in a shiny yellow AA van, yep definately not going to get it going again today. So I send my wife & daughter off to get the train home to get the 166 and meet me at Smaky's house.
Confirmed by Smaky balancer belt off and twisted around cam belt, the cover hasn't been off yet to see how bad it is, there does appear to be compression when it turns over Smaky think I may be lucky and it has just jumped a tooth (where is the praying smiley)
If its any worse than just a new belt set I.E. valves etc it will be off to the great Alfa scrapyard in the sky
