New cambelt - questions ?? What garage ??
Hey Guys & Gals ;-)
My beloved 146ti has just sailed through the MOT without a hint of work needed doing ;-) Alas the milage is now 85,000+ and I have owend it 2yrs.... So time for the CAMBELT change !!!!
I have looked through many posts on the forum here and have spent most of the day phoning garages to get prices.... Which vary greatly. Also the parts that need changing comes with differing advice aswell !!!! I am now sitting here with a spinning head and would love any thoughts/advice to help me ;-)
So far I know that the following basic parts needs to be changed for cambelt:-
Cam belt / Cam Belt Tensioner / Idler / Balancer Shaft Belt / Balancer Shaft Tensioner
(One gge mentioned that they didn't need to replace balance shaft belt or tensioner and in fact it improves performance leaving it off.... Another said if you leave them of it will cause vibrations in the engine that could lead to damage of other engine parts. I would not feel vibrations in the car as the engine mounts will dampen them ) Any views on this ??
I have also been informed that it is advisable to change the variator, as even if it is not making the diesel noise it could go soon after change of cambelt and then there would be the labour costs of taking belt etc of to get at variator.
Same has been said about the water pump, and hte fact that the new taught belts could overload the old water pump and cause it also to break soon after change of belts.
Has anyone just had the cambelt changed and not the variator and water pump, and if so have these 2 items lasted OK ??
Or is it best to get it all done at the same time.
I love my car to bits and it is not really a money issue, but at the same time I have just spent £340 on 4 new tyres so with the cambelt and extra bits it is getting close to the value of the car !!!!
Also one company mentioned it did not know how the company that offers the job at the lowest price can do it for this, which did worry me slightly as the lower quoted company has excellent reviews on here and is was going to plump for them. Also would be a nice blow out for the car round the M25 and the other motorways to get to them ;-) Any excuse for giving my black beauty a good clear out ;-)
Sorry for the lengthy post, but apart from engine re-build I believe this is the next biggest job for the car .....
Thanks in advance for any help/advice ;-) !!!
