About 4 weeks ago my 146 suffered catastrophic engine damage after a return journey from Peterborough to the Wirral. She had been burning oil for a long time, a consequence of having worn piston rings. Originally, the headgasket had gone, and was then replaced. I kept throwing money at trying to keep the car running as I fell in love with it, I really had. Problem after Problem kept surfacing, and in the end Ive decided to call it a day.
She was being looked at by an Engine centre who struggled to find a decent quality Twin Spark to replace my blown one. During this time I went to look at some Alfa 156s as a possible replacement. However, after Test Driving one, Ive decided the 156 isnt the car for me at this moment in time. I will have another Alfa Romeo in the future, maybe when I start settling down in life, who knows.
Ive now bought an '04 MG ZS, which surprisingly is similar in handling to my 146, if not a little better. Ill miss my Bella to the day I die, but I couldnt deal with the heartbreak of everything going wrong. I dont blame the fact that she was an Alfa Romeo, but the engine centre said the engine was very very worn, at 47,000 miles!!!! Im guessing foul play is afoot, and some clocking has taken place.
Id just like to take this opportunity to thank everyone on the forums who helped me overcome original niggling problems during the happy phase of Alfa ownership. Sorry I ran out of funds to keep such a rare car running
Happy Motoring everyone, and keep that Italian Flair thriving
