I Thought I would share with you my experience of Bensport in Ilton, Somerset after taking it in for a service.
I phoned them up a couple of weeks ago and booked my car in for a service as they had quoted me £80 because I didn't need plugs or anything major. I also wanted them to check a rear wheel squeal, a knocking sound coming from the front suspension and check my steering and my headlights as I couldn't adjust them. I took it down early on Friday morning and met the owner who is a really nice chap. He lent me a 147 2.0 courtesy car which I was very impressed with, although changing into 3rd was virtually impossible due to the gearstick not going in properly.
Anyway, within an hour of me dropping it off they called me to tell me the bad news. I needed 2 new front wishbones, new rear brake pads and a new auxiliary belt. Including the service and labour they quoted me £370 in total, OUCH!!!! A couple of hours later they phoned me again and told me that the sump had been welded and botched from an accident (which i had no idea about) and that the hole the plug came out of was in bad shape and the plug wouldn't go back in. They decided to fill the hole with weld and re-drill and tap the thread, although they recommended I get a replacement sump.
Unfortunately they couldn't finish the job on the day and weren't open on Saturday but said they would finish the job on Sunday. I phoned them to see of was ready and they let me know that there was even more bad news. The headlights on both sides weren't adjustable as the automatic and manual adjusters were fused so I need new headlights, I need 2 new rear tyres as they are on the limit (I have started a thread on which tyres to get if you would be happy to give me your input). The front brake pads need replacing soon and there is an oil leek that needs to be fixed. So to get it up to scratch I need to spend a quite a few pennies on it. The total cost of all the work was £430.65p. I am so glad I had savings to cover it
Over all I am very pleased with my experience with Bensport. While it did cost me a lot of money they managed to find the problems i was talking about and fix them in a far better manner than any other garage I have been to. I highly recommend Bensport to anyone looking for an Alfa specialist in the Somerset area. The car drives a lot better than it did before it went in and the knocking and squeaking has gone. The steering issue is still there but with 2 worn rear tyres I am going to replace them and see how it handles, in fact I am going to get a set of 4. I also get a bad wobble if I go over 80mph but again it might be the tyres as I have had wobble before.
Unfortunatey my MOT is due by the end of September and Bensport don't do MOT's but there is an MOT centre right behind them that they can book it into if you need it done. I didn't get it done as I wanted to sort out my tyres first and I will get my headlights done asap as it is coming up to winter and i will need to see properly. After that I will buy a second hand sump and hold onto it until i need a cambelt change. I am going to take it to Bensport for the cambelt change and get the sump and oil leek done at the same time.
