When i had my old 2.0 Zetec Escort, i used to have the standard 14" alloys on, this would easily pull me to the sunny side of 135 pritty quickly! As soon as i put 17"s on, i struggled to get up to 125 and then it was like hitting a brick wall and WOULD NOT go any quicker.
(On 14's the tyre circumfrence was 1889mm and the 17" was 1984mm, thats +95mm)
In my purple QV i had 16" alloys on, blowing exhaust, knackered variator, other than that she was completely standard. That pulled me again to the sunny side of 130+ quite quickly.
With my current QV, 17" alloys again, get to 119 on the speedo, pulls to this quite quickly and then SMACK! She wont go any faster!!!
What i plan on doing, is put smaller wheels on her, i was complaining about the wheels making the handly crappy and dog slow any way but now this has given me even more a good reason to, quicker acceleration.
Im currently running 215/40R17 and it will be reduced to 195/50R15, this takes the rolling circumfrence from 1896mm down to 1809mm. (This is 87mm difference)
Has anybody else experienced the same sort of thing? I have larger wheels yes, but a MUCH more powerful engine than that of my old QV, the engine runs fine and strong, even wheel spins when going in to 2nd on dry sticky tarmac which i thought was quite impressive, but she still refuses to go above 120! Should i expect the same sort of trend i found with the Escort but the other way around, it should be reveresed and go quicker!
Its bugging me now as i will be doing an evening track session at Cadwell Park soon with our local car club and down want to be over taken by Corsa red tops on the back straight!!! lol
