White smoke (steam) is a sign of a poorly torqued head post rebuild, or even worse, a missed crack in the head during inspection, that would spell disaster really as al the prvious work would need to be done again.
Another thing it could mean is overfuelling, and this is normally down to a faulty lambda sensor, this will also be droping your fuel economy down to around 20 mpg.
The engine stalling when you get the steering to full lock is worrying, short of a faulty steering pump then I can only think that the idle actuator is sticky and slow to respond to inputs from the ECU, the engine should labour with the steering held at full lock but not stall, it would normally increase the revs a little to compensate for the extra drag on the drivetrain, this again though can happen when the Lambda is dead, so I think you need to get this car onto a laptop and change that lambda probe it's going to tell you about.
