Re: 146 1.6 ts cambelt change question
The covers are held on with numerous 5mm ribe head screws (Torx T40 will fit though), but just looking at the belt isn't enough, a 1000 mile belt looks the same as a 36000 mile one, mainly because as soon as the belts go through the pulleys and over the water pump they lose the markings and the reason we say not to reuse the belts is because they are directional, when new they have arrows on them to show you the direction of rotation. 5 Belts were fitted in the wrong direction and tested in Milan whilst I was doing my apprenticeship and they were failing at aroud 8000 miles on average and they had all failed by 13000, it's just because of the way the layers are laid they have to be picked up on the pulleys in the correct order.
Back to the covers, when you are removing them, if they dont just fall off then there IS still a screw in there, the covers crack easy and I recommend you just nip the screws when refitting or the plastic splits round the holes.
