Well, the belt change went well!
Looks like the idler was the original on the car - it is a metal one and very corroded. The cambelt tensioner was white nylon and you could hear a grinding when it turned
Balance belt tensioner was the most worn. plug no1 had a puddle of oil in it and looks like it has been firing erratically. Cleaned it out and i'll be changing the plugs next week.
Swapped the variator - in the car I may add. The guy doing the work reckons that in his years of working with Alfas he has never had to take the cam out to get one off.
Alternator mount was loose which we tightened up. All in all it went very well. The car is now far far quicker than it was!
