Tar-oil deposit in filler cap/engine.
More questions for the more knowledgeable of you... (guesses allowed!)
My 146 wasn't given a descent drink of oil before I bought her, hence I drove it for 25 miles on very, very low oil... The low oil light flashed once when I was going down-hill, that's how I guessed I might have a problem...
Anyway, when I got her home, I filled her up with some 10W-40. Now, I noticed that there was a heavy buildup of sludge in the filler cap and right down into the engine. It's not mayonnaise so I don't have a gasket leak. It's heavy brown tar.
Is this a sign that it's been overheated and the oil has burned up? How would you recommend I proceed with the engine. It's out of the car getting a new clutch plate and timing belts.
Should I clean the deposit using diesel in the oil and hand-crank the engine.
Should I strip the engine to clean the gunk.
Should I replace the oil.
Should I not worry about it.
Should I assume the worst, the bearings/oil seals are blown.
Should I do something else...
