What are the signs of knocking/pinking?

I've only ever heard it happen on an old Rover Metro/100 thingy.
In 1st, 2nd and 3rd on my car, there's a very faint metallic "rustling" noise every time you plant your foot down. You can make it go, simply by backing off every so slightly (i.e. not pressing down so hard). Is this simply something to do with the fancy-arse manifold? Is it pinking? Should I shut-up, stop worrying and accept the fact that all engines make a helluav lot of noise under load? Cheers

I heard that on my parents 406 yesterday. Engine has 15,000 miles and cold so I thought it was a loose cover or something... I wonder... Wait and see what others have to say.

It could be a loose manifold cover or some other resonance.

You can tell for sure by giving your boy a tankful of the highest octane rated fuel you can get your hands on (Super U/L @ 95 octane or Shell Optimax) or buy some proprietary octane booster and stick it in the tank.

If the noise goes away, then you should try shopping for petrol at a different garage. Supermarkets and some of the unbranded garages sell fuel that's down at the old 2-star rating (90 octane I think). Your Alfa needs 92 octane or above.
