Temp gauge wiggle

Yesterday the temp gauge on my 145 cloverleaf stated to wiggle up and down! Thought the problem may be related to a loose connection, so I removed the temp sensor connector (the one on the thermostat housing). Which I found had no effect! I found a second thermostat to the right of the engine block. Removal of the connector for this sensor caused the temp gauge to fall to zero, and reconnection seems to have solved my problem for the time being.

Is the sensor on the therostat housing purely for activating the the rad cooling fan? And the one to the right of the engine block for the temp guage and ECU?

Anyway, should I replace the temp sensor, or are my symptoms more likley to be related to a loose connection, as I would expect a faulty sensor to give an inaccurate reading rather than a flucturating one?
