Well, Well, Well... I finally find somebody who has had a comparably crap weekend on the car front... Here's my disaster...
On Sunday I decided to finally try and get my 146 on the road again, but it is located about 25 miles away in a friends house in the Wicklow Mountains... So off I headed, dropping over to another friend to pick up a set of jump-leads, but of course forgetting to bring my tools... Anyway, I was heading over this vast plane in the mountains and took a wrong turn, heading south instead of west, but being a bit dopey from the night before, didn't realise till 15 miles later... At that stage it was too late to backtrack to take the other turn, so I just kept going knowing that there was another route which would bring me back to where I wanted. So I added 25 miles to a 25 mile trip.
So, got to the house with the 146 and had had to grab dinner, a nice Indian will do, had a beef madras. Got to work on the car... battery was dead, so gave it a boost with the leads I brought, engine started on first turn (been sitting for 3 months). Off I went for a short drive to give the battery a good charge... 15 miles later, it was darkish, so going down a narrow road I hit the main-beams... bang... car died, lost power steering, no lights... going downhill... getting faster... out of nowhere a lay-by appeared! Pulled in... opened the bonnet... checked the battery connections... all OK, still no power and the interior lights were dark orange. Figured that the battery wasn't taking a charge because of a loose lead, so called out my mate in his hi-ace to jump-start it again... Stomach was starting to get real acidy from the Indian. Got home and removed the old 146 battery to bring it home in the 145...
Headed off home across the vast open plane again... it's a very narrow road, frequented by tourists and sales men taking shortcuts, and other 'nocturnal' creatures (ahem... 'park and ride'...)... I came to the crossroads in the centre, where I made my previous mistake, and took the correct turn for a change... Headed up the road, noting a car's full beams in the distance coming closer at speed... but he failed to dip while approaching me,
so I kept a good line on the very edge of the road (minding the 3 foot drop only inches away) and when he passed I was still dazed and didn't see a pothole which I clocked at 30MPH... rant I drove on for about 30 foot noting a 'swish, swish, swish' sound from the front left... so I jumped out and found... a flat tyre! Bo11ix.
Removed the tyre and located the damage... a bent inside rim, but luckily the brand new P6000 was perfect... started fitting the spare low-profile tyre and just then remembered that when I fitted the new alloys, I had to purchase longer bolts to fit them. On tightening the bolts finger-tight, the freaking wheel wouldn't turn because the bolts were fouling in the brake disk...!!!!!
1 hour later (11.30pm)... my mate in his hi-ace was back out with a set of 4 bolts and an alloy off the 146... Fitted that despite the lack of tread on the inside... and headed home.
