Can anyone help? My hand brake light keeps coming on for about 5-10seconds or longer when I am driving along. It's VERY annoying, my hand brake is definitely off and is working fine. Does anyone know what causes this and how to rectify it?
Sorry I couldn't add, I was having my lunch. I have something to add now though:
McGuinn, with your last reply, were you getting your lights mixed up? I know that the handbrake and brake warning light are the same one, but I'm pretty sure that the brake wear warning light is a separate one.
Handbrake is (!), while brake wear warning is a cicle with two stylised pads round it?
I'd say likely causes for handbrake light are:
Low brake fluid
switch under handbrake lever loose or faulty
Car possessed by demon
I had the same problem with my 155 1.8 TS in Spanin. Just topped up the brake fluid and the problem was gone. But now I have a NEW problem on my 155 1.7 TS. When I'm accelerating as fast as the car can go, the handbrake light comes on. Don't know what the problem is, but I'll check the fluid on this one too. Do you get the light when you're doing something "special" like cornering og accelerating or does it just come and go? If that's the problem it might just be a loose cabel or a bad contact somewhere.
It does it all the time, but not when I jump over rivers. No seriously, I've just spoken to an alfa specialist and he rekons it's the slave cylinder. I'm going to top up the fluid and take it to the garage next week. I'll let you know the outcome.
I reckon the fluid slops about a bit, so when accelerating/braking/cornering the light will flicker on and off, as the sensor float is in the middle underneath the filler cap, unless it is filled all the way to the maximum line. Recently my friend's GTV had this problem and although the fluid wasn't to the minimum line, a small top up did the trick.
