Stuttering 145

Strange thing happened yesterday, someone might have an answer. I was comming off the motorway, stuck on the off ramp when my car started choking. It took a good 10 minute blast till the car ran fine again. I reckon it is either something to do with the air intake or the fuel line. If it is the fuel line, where is the filter located on a 98 145? Or could it have been just the bad weather and the exhaust from the car in front?

Any ideas?

Could water have got into the fuel tank? When you braked for the slip-road off the motor-way, it may have entered the fuel line.
