The Variator is the Variable Value Timing actuator on the camshaft. It is also called a phase variator. It works with oil presure that basically advances the inlet camshalf as a whole - no modification in profile.
I see the rover 200vi on the other side use an eccentric drive to vary the cam duration. (its VVC)
It is best to combine it with your timing belt service as the same work is being done - add 90 quid for the variator itself.
Quick question: is there a light tap, or a full-on diesel rattle? At the back (top left) of the engine (where the inlet camshaft is)
