145 brake questions
Have a few questions on brakes on a 145 1.6 boxer which I just picked up recently for a very pretty penny. It needed a lot of work and currently the gearbox needs an overhaul as it sounds like the Kelly Family on speed. Clutch and slave cylinder have been replaced.
Anyway, I'm not happy with the performance of the brakes. I've come from driving a Fiesta 1.1l, (whay hey!) and I've noticed that the pressure I apply to the brakes through the foot peddle in the 145 does not give the braking power I want. I assume the brakes are 'soft'. The pads are new enough, but I have not ruled them out as the source of the problem. The car has a high milage on it though (110k), and I'm wondering whether the master cylinder or the brake lines could be the cause of this effect. I also blead the brake lines.
One thing I notice is that when I stop on the foot brake, and apply the handbrake (without releasing the footbrake at all) the footbrake peddle will drop another 1cm.
My final question is about a single wire I found running towards each of the brake calipers. It appears out of the wheel arch, but is not connected on the end. Is this the ABS wire (where fitted), or a disconnected brake wear sensor???
Anyway, all remarks about my situation will be gratefully received. I have a lot more to ask about these beasts... I am using an AlfaSud/33 Haynes manual at the moment for running repairs!
